What drives a single person to create nearly 20,000 works of art?
Our Voices presents the world premiere of SOOT AND SPIT written by Charles Mee and directed by LPTW member Kim Weild. A unique theatrical experience, it celebrates the life of acclaimed American outsider artist James Castle. Born profoundly deaf, Castle never learned to read, write, sign or speak. His art was his language – a beautiful, rich, haunting and powerful language evoking longing, loneliness, humor and silence.
Join us as we bring Castle’s world to life through bluegrass, dance, American Sign Language and multi-media displays of his artwork. Our hope is that SOOT AND SPIT enables its audience to experience the “other”- and rejoice in the unquenchable creativity of the human spirit.
June 8th and 10th – ASL interpreted performances
June 17th Autism-Friendly performance
SOOT AND SPIT was developed as part of the Archive Residency and is presented by Our Voices Theater, the New Ohio Theatre and IRT Theater.
