Julia’s Reading Room
Julia’s Reading Room is a place for League playwrights, librettists, directors, actors and producers to bring works in progress to be read, or to join us for cheese and wine to listen to the reading of a new work. The readings are informal and unrehearsed, focusing on providing an artist or the sponsor of the project a chance to hear her work in a supportive environment and for other members to share in the process. As a member, you can attend or participate by submitting your work.

I will give two very specific examples of the LPTW’s magic!

I performed my solo piece DUST TO DUST at the LPTW New Play Festival where the audience response encouraged me to expand the work. The piece was subsequently performed at Stage Left Studio  – another opportunity made possible through LPTW member connections and recommendations.The proceeds from a benefit performance of the play during that run went toward funding the first LPTW International Theater Award.This same play has now been selected for presentation at the Women Playwrights International Conference in Stockholm this August where I will also re-connect with other women playwrights/producers/performers whom I have met through LPTW members.This fall I will also perform the play in Romania and then Germany, where I will reunite with one of the LPTW affiliates who is also a member of ITI (International Theater Institute).

The reading of an early draft of a theatrical fable I wrote called, PERFECT CURIOSITY at ‘Julia’s Reading Room’ was enormously helpful in clarifying the nature and direction I wanted and needed to take with the piece as it developed. Thanks to insights and introductions from fellow LPTW members the piece has been enlarged to include a choregrapher and composer. It is now in the process of being workshopped for future production.”

“I am Richarda Abrams, Actress, Singer, Playwright, Educator.  I became a member of the League of Professional Theatre Women in November of 2010.  What strikes me the most about our League is the dynamic women that I have had the pleasure of working with.  I am very active on the Programming committee and I find that whatever situation we are faced with, there is an unspoken underlying sentiment of women pulling together and getting things done.  In fact that attitude permeates the entire organization, beginning with our illustrious leadership.

For me that has carried over into many areas of my professional life.  The largest influence has manifested in my writing a one woman show about a very influential woman in our history, Mary McLeod Bethune.  The women of LPTW have been encouraging, extremely helpful, and willing to listen.

Because of the pulling together and getting things done sentiment, my show now has two prominent New York theaters interested in my work, one for a tour and one for a festival. A regional theatre festival is interested in my work for the summer of 2013.  My play is scheduled for a spring 2013 reading in LPTW’s Julia’s Reading Room and more immediately, an excerpt from my work will be included in the LPTW’s 30 Plays Celebrates 30 Years in “A Seat At The Table” in November of 2012!

“Being in the League has afforded me the opportunity to meet women I would never had the chance to meet  and know had it not been for this organization.   I was working in the sheltered men-centric world of Broadway and the chance to actually meet other women in leadership positions was exciting!  I have seen the organization grow and  bring in some amazing women who have joined our ranks. I helped initiate and fund the Oral History program at the Library, working alongside Betty Corwin.  This eventually led to our 5 season Women in Theatre television series on CUNY-TV hosted by Linda Winer. That experience alone opened doors and conversations with women I had always longed to meet. Lucille Lortel endowed us with the ability to honor young women who are undertaking new and exciting theatre projects which we continue to search out for their excellence.   I saw our WOMEN IN THEATRE magazine grow from a fledgling newsletter to full blown magazine.  Our design exhibition  Curtain Call at the Library for the Performing Arts was breathtaking because of the painstaking work put in by volunteer League members and talented designers…..three years in the making, but we did it! There have been many changes through the years.  I am so proud of our new leadership.and the exciting new plans for the future.  Let’s keep growing!”
