When playwright and author, Luigi Pirandello met the talented young actress Marta Abba, he became obsessed with her. She was his lead actress and Muse in the last decade of his life. To maintain her artistic & personal independence, however, Abba remained celibate. Late in life, the somewhat senile but outspoken 87 year old Marta Abba donated to Princeton the 560 letters Pirandello had written her. The correspondence reveals Pirandello’s creative process, his life and his suffering. The MUSE AND THE MAESTRO takes place in Princeton’s Firestone Library on the day when the Abba reluctantly parts with her precious archive from the man she revered and had always addressed as Maestro.
