DESCRIPTION:Join Us for our next ON HER SHOULDERS presentation!\nPECULIAR SAM (1880) by Pauline Hopkins\ndirected by Arminda Thomas\, dramaturgy by Celia Braxton\n\nPAULINE ELIZABETH HOPKINS (1859-1930) was an African-American novelist\, journalist\, playwright\, historian\, and editor. Peculiar Sam\, a musical piece in three acts\, is considered to be the earliest extant professional play by an African American woman. Hopkins used plantation songs\, ballads\, and spirituals as the basis for her score\, with scenes telling the stories of several escaped slaves and their route to freedom and success.\nAdmission was by donation\, doors opened at 6:45PM.\nRSVP:\nOnHerShouldersReservations@gmail.com\n \nON HER SHOULDERS is a program of the New Perspectives Theatre Company in association with the School of Drama at the New School. The Play in Context\, the dramaturgical and scholarly presentation component to the program\,\nis sponsored by LPTW.\nOHS was founded in 2013 to present rehearsed\, staged readings of plays by women from across the spectrum of time\, with contemporary dramaturgs contextualizing them for modern audiences. To date\, the program has presented 40 plays by 32 writers from the years 1668 to 1970. OHS is produced by LPTW members Melissa Attebery and Melody Brooks; with Kristin Heckler as Associate Producer.\nThis program was made possible\, in part\, with public funds from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs\, in partnership with the City Council\, and with funds from the NYS Council on the Arts\, a state agency\, with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.\n
