SUMMARY:NETTLES SALON SERIES - WOMEN: ENDURANCE & OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF #PUNTOARTS
DESCRIPTION:Nettles Artists Collective invites everyone to our first 2017 Salon Series in celebration of International Women’s Day and the official opening of Punto Arts initiative.\n\nMarch 8th\, 2017\nTime: 6pm to 9pm\n@ Punto Space\n325 West 38th Street (between 8th and 9th Avenue)\n.\nThis is a FREE event with a $20 suggested donation. Space is limited.\n\nWOMEN: ENDURANCE\nFrom chastity belts to bodily integrity and reproductive rights\, from the male gaze to the public office holding\, from a subordinate position to the power to vote. When we talk about women\, what are we really talking about? What is the role they play in the arts? What is the role they play on their daily lives and how they build a community? How their endurance strengthens and molds our fragile society?\n\nTo lead our conversations for the evening\, we invited Dr. Marcia Esparza. She is the Founder and Director of the Historical Memory Project\, a forum for documenting state violence in Latin America. She has presented her researches in Athens\, Greece and most recently\, in Sarajevo\, Bosnia and has published in leading academic journals. Dr. Esparza has received prestigious fellowships from the Ford Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities.\nShe teaches at John Jay College of Criminal Justice - City University of New York\, CUNY. (www.historicalmemoryproject.com).\n\nSome of our best community performers will be presenting their work while you nibble on some refreshments.\n\nThe Nettles' Salon Series exist in the spirit of 17th century French salons which inspired\, provoked and engaged through thoughtful conversation. Each Salon has a specific theme lead by a Nettles moderator and an invited special guest. Salons' format are in a lounge style with refreshments and soothing music to provide relaxation and stimulation for our talk.\n\n#PuntoArts: an initiative created by Punto Space in conjunction with its resident company\, Nettles Artists Collective\, to create bridges between artistic communities.\n\nNettles Artists\nWe imbue the American art scene with authentic\, global voices and multidisciplinary collaborations by providing a platform for the performing and visual arts. Nettles is a NYC-based artists collective run by Latinas devising and producing new works. We are visual and performance artists moving and creating together.
